Standardized presentation of the approach and inpatient program of schema therapy combined with nature-adventure therapy

In the field of psychotherapy, there is a constant demand for innovative methods that provide patients with an experiential and effective therapeutic process. The Department of Psychotherapy at Semmelweis University offers a four-week intensive programme of schema therapy, primarily for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Due to the high prevalence of BPD and its significant impact on quality of life, nature-based therapies gaining increasing importance in clinical practice alongside conventional treatment methods. In this context, the integrated approach of Nature-Adventure Based Schema Therapy (N-ABST) was developed, uniquely combining evidence-based practices to promote sustainable psychological and environmental well-being.

The programme aims to identify and modify maladaptive schemas, then engage participants in nature-based activities and organically incorporate reflections on these experiences into the schema therapy process. This experiential group intervention engages participants at cognitive, emotional and behavioural levels, facilitating their personal development and a deeper connection with nature, themselves, and others. The methodology of N-ABST is based on literature reviews, clinical experience, and expert consultations. This publication seeks to provide an overview of the programme and its theoretical framework, focusing primarily on the potential for clinical application and integration of nature-adventure therapy, and to describe the methodological approach. By applying standardised reporting guidelines in Hungarian the study aims to contribute to understanding the background of research findings related to the programme, their interpretation, and the programme’s replicability.

Our study undertakes a concise description of the development and implementation of this innovative intervention. The psychotherapeutic process, the professional experiences of the therapeutic team, and the challenges and successes of the pilot programme will be presented in a subsequent publication, as these details are essential for a complete understanding of the therapeutic effects and broader implications of this new, ecologically-oriented schema therapy.
